1. I think that the pigeon is very specical to his family, it helped him escape from the germans. The pigeon helped David see if there was danger coming and the pigeon basically saved his life.
2. At the Pustkow Vacation Camp, David was forced to work for the Germans. He was given an axe and was told to cut trees for the Germans. The camp was bad for him because it was non-stop work for the people in it. I think the Germans called it a vacation camp so that the captured people might be tricked and not try to escape while entering.
